Núcleo de Estudios sobre Memoria - Center for Memory Studies

Introduction

The Núcleo de Estudios sobre Memoria (Center for Memory Studies) brings together researchers and university docents interested in exploring, from an academic perspective, studies on memories with an emphasis on the Southern Cone of Latin America. The center was created in 2001, within the context of the Instituto de Desarrollo Económico y Social (IDES).

The center is a space of dialogue and reflection to analyze the presence and meaning of the past in society. The research works on the social processes of memory, studying the varying scope and levels of the transmission of social memory, its actors, the struggle between memories, the complex temporary nature of these processes, and the cultural and communicative devices of memory.

The majority of this research focuses on the memory of the processes of political violence and state terrorism in Argentina and the Southern Cone during the 1960s and 1980s. However, the extensive field of such studies on memory also includes research focused on other dimensions of social memory, and the other types of experiences that are also debated and diffused in this framework.
